Steve Eisman of "The Big Short" fame has been bullish on infrastructure stocks after studying the industry for the past two years, and here are the companies he likes the most. Eisman, senior portfolio manager at Neuberger Berman, said he has narrowed the universe of investable stocks to 80 stocks. The stocks Eisman passed up included residential solar companies, which already had a great run during the Covid-19 pandemic as major beneficiaries of zero interest rates. Instead, Eisman likes solar panel companies that sell to utilities, which he said are doing well from a fundamental perspective. There's a rotation happening in the market that investors can take advantage of by investing in cyclical stocks, according to Morgan Stanley Investment Management's Andrew Slimmon. He recommended investors to have a more cyclical bias to their portfolio, pointing out that the best-performing sectors in the last month are energy, materials and industrials. He also thinks there's still room to run in semiconductor stocks — even if the overbought group sees a near-term pullback. " Slimmon named Applied Materials , Ameriprise Financial and Valero Energy as some of the stocks he likes right now. Regarding energy, Slimmon said the space could continue to show strength if the economy begins to weaken.

As the U.S. presidential election comes into the spotlight, Goldman Sachs has assessed the potential impact on global markets by changes in regulation, taxation, and other government policies. However, it sees U.S. subsidiaries of foreign companies potentially gaining if Trump delivers on a cut to corporation taxes. On average, European companies generate 25% of sales in the U.S., but most come from U.S.-based businesses rather than exports from the EU, according to Goldman Sachs. As these companies run substantial U.S. operations and assets, Goldman also sees them as benefiting from potential U.S. corporate tax cuts under Trump. However, they flagged that Biden has mentioned increasing the rate of corporate tax, "which would have an impact on US-exposed companies."

The 10-year Treasury yield started the new year trading around 3.8% after a steep decline in late 2023. Against this backdrop, CNBC Pro asked three strategists and money managers how they would allocate $50,000 with yields rising again. Specifically, he recommended bills with a three- to six-month maturity, which investors can gain exposure to through exchange-traded funds such as the Vanguard Short-Term Treasury ETF (VGSH) or SPDR Portfolio Short Term Treasury ETF (SPTS) . Exchange-traded funds that offer exposure to these assets include the iShares 20 Plus Year Treasury Bond ETF (TLT) and Vanguard Intermediate-Term Corporate Bond ETF (VCIT) . "It feels like we've passed the peak of pessimism about the UK," said Daniel Lockyer, senior fund manager at 7 billion-pound investment and advice group Hawksmoor Investment Management, which increased its exposure to UK companies in August. Reuters Graphics Reuters GraphicsLeigh Himsworth, UK fund manager at Fidelity International, said he was "trying to pick off UK retailers we can buy", while it was also "time to pick up some of the (UK) real estate sector." But while noting good economic reasons to call an upturn for UK stocks, fund managers also stressed the need for further steps from policymakers to revive interest in British equities. Companies like CRH - the largest road paver in America - are newly flush with billions from the US government which is the largest buyer of asphalt in the country. Some in the business say it's the golden age of infrastructure. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, also known as the Bipartisan Infrastructure law, is adding $1.2 trillion, a 40% to 50% increase over the previous FAST Act. But there are some strings attached.

There are about 2.8 million miles of roads in the United States, and 94% of that is made of asphalt. There's also recycled asphalt pavement, which is exactly what it sounds like: pavement that has been scraped off a road, ground up and used again. Right now, CRH says about 25% of every mile of road it paves is recycled asphalt pavement, though there are some places where the share of recycled asphalt is much higher. The reason: When recycled pavement was first introduced, it had a tendency to degrade faster, simply because it was older. The industry, represented by the National Asphalt Pavement Association, wants to raise the level of recycled asphalt in any given road to about 50% of the mix that is laid down.

UK listing shakeup requires double dose of hope

The Financial Conduct Authority isn’t the only watchdog to water down its listing rules, but it has more reasons than most to up its game. The UK prides itself on being a financial hub, but accounted for just 5% of global IPOs between 2015 and 2020. That’s why the FCA is proposing to replace a fiddly two-tier system of standard and “premium” listing rules with a single class. CONTEXT NEWSThe UK Financial Conduct Authority on May 2 published a series of proposals designed to encourage companies to list in the UK. The new framework would remove many investor protections currently required under the premium listing category.
The blue-chip index (.FTSE) fell 0.3%, down for the third straight session, while the mid-cap FTSE 250 (.FTMC) shed 0.4% as of 0829 GMT. The FTSE 100 had a good run earlier this month, buoyed by strength in commodity stocks and defensives like pharmaceuticals. However, markets have taken to a wait-and-see mode as earnings kicked in, to assess the impact of monetary tightening on results. Oil and gas stocks (.FTNMX601010) rose 0.6% as crude prices gained on reports of falling U.S. crude oil and fuel inventories. Drax Group's shares (DRX.L) rose 3.8% after the power generator announced a 150 million pound ($187 mln) share buyback programme.
People clap during the ringing of the closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange. The United States is more attractive than European exchanges for new listings and there is not much that Europeans can do to change that, analysts told CNBC. Both examples highlight how the U.S. stock market is more attractive to the corporate world. Roger Jones, head of equities at London and Capital, told CNBC there are two main reasons why this is the case. "Sellers or listers can get better prices in the U.S. which still trades on significantly higher valuations than Europe.
Meanwhile, extremely wide forecasts for new public borrowing requirements make the outlook for government bonds uncertain. Here are the main budget predictions for UK stocks, gilts and the pound. However NatWest analysts flagged that the OBR will likely revise down growth forecasts for the next five years, making the outlook for interest rates finely balanced. Hunt will likely keep the budget "reasonably dull" after Truss's "mini-budget" sent sterling to its lowest on record, she added. Investors in UK stocks are already grappling with a wide valuation gap with U.S. equities.
London CNN —London is used to punching well above its weight in global financial markets. And 70% of global secondary bond market trading happens in the city, according to the London Stock Exchange. Beyond the jobs they create and the tax they generate, financial markets also channel capital into companies to fund future growth. In other words, to safeguard its future, London needs to reinvigorate its stock markets. Those “unicorns” should be listing in London “at an earlier stage,” Haynes argues, “rather than growing through private equity and being sold off to Nasdaq.”Hoggett of the London Stock Exchange puts it this way: “London needs to be young, scrappy and hungry.”
